In 2002, the United States\' Environmental Protection Agency made lumber companies use a non arsenic chemical to treat deck lumber so that it would resist rotting and insect damage. The new type of pressure treated lumber is treated with ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quaternary). A chemical that is much less toxic than arsenic compounded used to make pressure treated before 2002. Special joist hangers, nail, screws, and washers must be used with ACQ lumber because of the corrosive nature of this type of decking lumber. We use only stainless steel, or triple-galvanized deck joist hangers, screws, and nails in our Northern Virginia deck projects. Many of our Northern Virginia Contractor deck companies use some very exotic hardwood decking materials. These deck materials include red wood, Ipe, red Cedar, and Red Balau. Ipe is one of the hardest decking materials on the market today. Ipe is really Ironwood that is produced into decking material from trees grown in South America. The heartwood of redwood resists insects and decay. Redwood decking has no chemical additives and will not warp.
